The Many Varieties Of Leather Jewelry
Long before goldsmiths came to America there was already a thriving form of jewelry being created here. It was not only used as decoration but it was also used as currency and medals of honor for warriors. Leather jewelry has been around for a very long time and part of the history of leather jewelry resides in the proud history of the Native American people.
Over the years other have taken the idea of leather jewelry and added to it to create a very impressive art form that many people are beginning to prefer over any precious metal jewelry and it is finding a home in some of the most exclusive jewelry stores in the world.
Back when there was no quest for gold in the United States and back when wealth was measured by pride and not by gain there was a form of jewelry being made in America that was used by the Native American tribes as currency and markings to tell the rank of someone within the tribe. This leather jewelry was created by a proud people and it was in the form of bracelets, necklaces, and charms that the artists would create for various purposes. Today this art form survives and is being used by many people to create some very beautiful leather jewelry for decoration or for personal identification. But what exactly is leather jewelry and how does one create jewelry from pieces of leather?
One of the more popular examples of leather jewelry is the wide bracelet that you see on the arms of many people these days. They will be decorated with elaborate scenes or designs and will be beautifully crafted using a technique that takes years to perfect and is best left in the hands of only the most talented artists. One of the more popular themes of these wide leather bracelets is becoming Asian oriented symbols such as Asian alphabet characters or even scenes of dragons done in beautiful color. These scenes can be quite elaborate and it is impressive the amount of detail they can squeeze into such a small space and it is equally impressive the wide array of colors they use to create this leather jewelry.
What looks like rope to you is jewelry to others. Many pieces of leather jewelry are rope like pieces that are used usually as necklaces. They are interwoven pieces of long leather strips that make a very beautiful design of their own if they are crafted just right. Many people will either wear these necklaces as a singular piece or they will loop many together into a different kind of necklace and in some cases these are used as belts or other accessories. Their diversity is impressive and their craftsmanship is durable and beautiful. As loops they can also be used as bracelets or earrings and they make a wonderful accessory to any outfit for men or women.
In recent years some craftsman have added metal to leather jewelry as an accent to the designs of the leather. They will use metal as clasps or something to add a little sparkle to the design of the leather jewelry. It is hard to say where this art form is headed but there are some very beautiful pieces that are created and formed into leather jewelry. So the next time you are considering a new piece of jewelry be it a necklace or bracelet consider leather jewelry and give an ancient American art form a chance to amaze you.
