Ruby Eternity Bands Form A Glorious Tradition
Ruby is regarded in the global spectrum as one of the finest symbols of eternal love, and for this the appeal of ruby has been prominent for centuries. Now if we draw the conclusion that this is the main reason for which the appeal of the ruby eternity bands, as a part of the convention, especially in respect of bridal wear is supreme, it will not be wrong.
Not only this, studies reveal that the ruby eternity bands are usually presented to the couples who remain on the way of celebrating their 15th and 40th wedding anniversary. But at the same time it will not be wise to expect the color of the ruby is always deep red. In fact rubies are available in different shades of red, ranging from orange-red, pinkish, to purple-red. However, the most valuable form comes in a deep red shade.
When we are discussing of the ruby eternity bands at the very outset we should be very clear that the history of ruby dates back to the ancient period. Even in the earliest saga of the Indian or Hindu civilization the significance and value of ruby was widely recognized. There are in fact ample instances of ruby in the ancient Sanskrit language, where it has been referred as Ratnaraj, which if translated will be known as “King of Gemstones.” Apart from this to the ancient Hindus ruby used to be known as the “Lord of all Gems.” The same is also applicable in the other parts of the world where the ruby eternity bands as a fine form of jewelry is much common. From a period of some 2,500 years ago till date ruby mining is still done in some parts of Asia, for example, Thailand and Burma, Australia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the United States. But the best quality of ruby is found in the region of Burma, now known as Myanmar. On this very subject a great number of studies have shown that ruby mining in Burma could be traced way back into the Stone Age and Bronze Age. This has been proved by the tools found in the Mogok mining area.
Till now we have discussed of the origin and availability of ruby and the acceptance of the ruby eternity bands as an ideal form of jewelry down the centuries, if not more. But it will also be better for us to know that the ruby eternity bands are also accepted as wedding rings, and in this context the practice is the same as was in the ancient ages. In the ancient times, wedding bands occupied the third finger on the left hand just as the style is in the present age. Now the importance of the third finger was based on the belief that the vein in the third finger, the “vena amoris,” had a direct relation with the heart and the ruby eternity bands would play a commendable role in strengthening that bond. This thought was propagated by the Egyptians above all and was adopted as a great truth by the ancient Greeks and Romans, though disproved in the later stages.
However even after the discovery of the absence of the vena amoris, the custom of wearing the ruby eternity bands on the third finger survived as before. Even in the early Christian marriages there used to be a ritual where the ruby eternity bands used to be worn the third finger. From that period till now the practice of wearing ruby eternity bands has been going on in an uninterrupted manner. It should be mentioned that the since the custom is to provide wedding bands, the misfortunate section of the society do provide the economical ones. Though the other ritual and ceremonies may differ the tradition of wedding band has been continuing through ages, for the affluent section sections in the form of ruby eternity bands while as economic ones for the poorer sections of the society.
