Patron Saint charms are one of the most important gifts a Catholic child can receive during the time of their Confirmation. You see, as a Catholic child, usually a pre-teen, prepares to be confirmed, he or she must choose a Patron Saint and take on their name.

During the preparation, the child will learn as much as he or she can about the Saints so that the proper one may be chosen. Once a Saint is chosen, the name will be revealed at the Confirmation (or shortly before). During this time, common gifts for the child are Patron Saint charms.

Wearing religious jewelry occurs in almost every religion whether it is the Christian religion, the Jewish religion, or any other variety. However, the religion that most prominently wears jewelry steeped in its faith is that of the Christian faith. Wearing religious jewelry for Christians is a way to show an outward symbol of a person’s inner faith. It was once known that the most common type of religious charm, in the Christian faith, was the cross or crucifix. Today, that is simply not so. In fact, Patron Saint charms are sweeping the world of religious jewelry and are some of the most popular and important pieces aside from the cross and crucifix. Of course, without the cross and the crucifix, there would be no Patron Saints.

For Christians, especially the Catholic sect, giving religious jewelry is a very important act. Religious jewelry is given at the time of birth, at the Baptism, at the First Holy Communion, and at the Confirmation. Typically at birth and the Baptism, small rosaries, rings, and small bracelets are given to Catholic babies. Later, as the child is a bit older, rosaries are still common, but necklaces are also common gifts for the First Holy Communion. It is most common, that for the Confirmation, Patron Saint charms are given to the child, and these are also typically the most meaningful of religious jewelry gifts within the Catholic faith.

Patron Saint charms that are given at the time of the Confirmation are especially important because the pre-teen who will be confirmed will need to choose a Patron Saint with whom he or she identifies and take their name. During this time, the child learns as much about the Saints as he or she possibly can and may even talk to relatives, parents, ministers, and priests about what their own Confirmation stories, what their names are, and what they mean. Once a child has chosen his or her Patron Saint, it will be part of the Confirmation and Patron Saint charms bearing the likeness and elements of that Patron Saint will be bestowed upon the child.
There are many Patron Saints, and many Patron Saint charms to go with them. Some of the most popular Saints are known throughout the world, regardless of religion. First and foremost, St. Jude is the most popular and well known of the Saints. He was one of the twelve Apostles and is the Patron Saint of desperate cases. St. Philomena is the Patron Saint of infants and children, and not much is known about her except that she was martyred when she was only 14 years old. St. Agnes is also a very well known Patron Saint (of girls and the children of Mary) as is St. Thomas Aquinas, the Patron Saint of students and universities. Many times a child will not choose the most popular or famous Patron Saint.
